JESUS <— What a Wonderful Name!

During my junior year of high school I was involved in a car accident with my older sister at the wheel. The car was a total lost and I had to get stitches due to a deep cut on the right side of my neck. Nonetheless, my sister and I walked away alive. When it was time to get my stitches removed, my pediatrician, who was also a Christian, asked to hear our version of events leading up to the accident. I proceeded to tell him how I stared into the headlights of a white van as it drove full speed into our turning vehicle.

He stopped me at that moment and asked, “What did you say as you saw the headlights getting closer and closer?”

Wondering why he asked that specific question I answered, “Well, I was shocked. I don’t think I said anything…or maybe I screamed…it happened so fast.”

“Well, what could you have said at that moment?”

My sister and I had a puzzled look on our faces. Then my mom, who was sitting at the corner, knew exactly what he meant and exclaimed, “Jesus! You could’ve called on the name of Jesus!”

That moment was a lesson learned and continues to stick with me as I live my life as a young adult. As I continue to mature and grow in my faith, I’ve grown to learn what my mom and doctor meant by just calling on the name of Jesus!

“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11 (NKJV)

“For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13 (NKJV)

In situations where words fail me, I can call on the name of Jesus. He’ll give me words to say. When I don’t know what to do, I can call on the name of Jesus. He’ll guide me. When I’m lonely or need comfort, Jesus is that name I can call on. He’ll remind me that I’m never alone.

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!

What a wonderful name!
