*Happiness Versus Joy*
When I accomplish a task, I feel happy. When I receive gifts of appreciation, I feel happy. When I hit the road with traffic at an all time low, I feel happy. When I don’t have to wait in a line, I feel happy. I also feel happy when I am well fed, adequately hydrated, and relaxed. Happiness comes and happiness goes depending on the situation.
I experience joy in the midst of chaos. When everything is crashing all around me I can still experience joy. When things don’t go according to plan, I can still experience joy. I can maintain my joy despite working in a toxic environment. You see…my joy stems from the Lord. He stabilizes me if my feelings get out of control. His joy is my strength (Nehemiah 8:10).
Where happiness is a feeling, joy is an experience.
We don’t need to wait until we get a promotion or when we graduate or get married or have children or travel the world or retire or lose weight to experience joy. We can get an unlimited source of joy from the Lord…and we can get it now!
Through the Holy Spirit, we receive His joy. When we are connected to Him, He brings us joy. Lasting joy resides in God himself.
I challenge myself everyday to seek the Lord and draw my joy–my strength from him. After all, the joy of the Lord is my strength.
So guess what? Joy wins!
