~~So You’re Just Going Through The Motions?~~

mo·tion /mōSH(ə)n/ (noun)- the act or process of moving or being moved.

Do you ever just go through the motions of life?

Brushing your teeth, turning off the alarm clock, driving a vehicle…all are motions that most of us don’t ever think about doing.

I mean, think about it. Have you ever felt as if you were just going through the motions? Pray everyday, be cordial to others, make it on time for work, eat meals daily, laugh at your coworker’s dry joke…

Okay. Don’t leave me hanging. Think about it right now. Have you ever, even for a minute or a second, just went through the motions?

I’ll admit it. I have.

When I catch myself going through the motions of life, I have to pause and reassess my situation. Have I drifted away from God’s word? Am I caught up in a lover’s trance? Have I forgotten to put God first? Did I get too caught up with being busy? Am I doing the same routine every single day? (Insert robot emoji here)

To be quite frank, I find myself going through the motions of life when I’ve momentarily lost sight of my purpose. This can be caused by much of life’s distractions. I’d let those distractions consume my time, mind, or body. Food (eating just to eat when you’re not even hungry) can be a distraction. This distraction can lead to weight gain, health issues, and even self-image issues. Busy schedules and rushed deadlines can become distractions. You’ve gotten so caught up with the activities of the week that you’ve forgotten the reasons for scheduling those activities in the first place! Distractions, distractions. They may catch you, and if you’re not careful, they will secure your seat on the motion train and can derail you from your God-given purpose.

But wait a minute.

Distractions can’t consume us if God is our conductor. He knows our purpose in life. For he created our inmost being; he knit us together in our mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13 NIV). He can direct us and guide us along the right paths for his name’s sake (Psalm 23:3b NIV). He knows our goals and blessed us with certain gifts in order for us to accomplish the things he set out for us. For He deserves all the glory, honor, and praise.

The apostle Paul said it best: Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever (1 Corinthians 9:24-25 NIV).

We can’t live life simply by going through everyday motions. We are meant to live life with purpose! If you’re thinking, “what is my purpose in life?” Then, ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find it; knock and the door will be opened to you (Matthew 7:7 NIV).

Dear Father, allow us not to get swallowed up by distractions. Allow us not to live life going through the motions. You know our purpose Lord and we trust that you will direct our paths.  I pray that in everything that is said and in everything that is done, it is done for your glory only. Allow us not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought. Allow us to consider others better than we do ourselves.  We know that we are not robots, and sometimes life can get in the way of us seeking the prize you have in store for us, but since your word says that with God all things are possible, we know that we can accomplish anything if it is your will. Have your way within us. Have your way within this world, Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

  1. I often find I get distracted not by bad things, rather just things that don’t matter. I get caught up in doing something that ultimately leads to nothing instead of chasing after the things God has put before me. Thanks for the reminder!
